Showtime!

Ah, trade show season.   Exactly what we need after the holiday season!  ENK Accessories Circuit has come and gone, and in a couple weeks the NY NOW will be upon us.  I'm looking forward to this show.   It does very well for us, we get to see a lot of old friends and the booth is going to have a new look!
THEN, a couple weeks later we are heading west for the WWD Magic show in Vegas!  We haven't done this show in years, and it seems very different than it used to be.  I'm looking forward to some fresh faces and maybe reconnecting with some buyers who don't make it to New York, and why should you in the winter time! (Except for the NY NOW of course!)

Come see us!

We are Vegan Tortoise and We've been here for years!

I'm back in the office after 4 long days at the NYNOW gift show in New York.  I'm tired and a little cranky.  Cranky because there seems to be a trend out there that has inadvertently hurt business for us.  Horn jewelry.  I think it's pretty safe to say faux-tortoise jewelry and accessories have been around for a while, considering my family alone has been producing it for over 50 years.  We aren't trying to be horn, and we don't want to be horn.

For years, while I was growing up and helping my family at trade shows, we would hear buyers saying, 'Oh, it's plastic' and they would walk away in disgust.  The stigma that we used plastic was tough to overcome but we did, faux-tortoise has been popular for years, and I know all of our customers love and appreciate our jewelry.  This material, cellulose acetate may be plastic, but our factories in Italy take great care in creating these rich painterly effect colors, and our acetate is light weight and durable and so comfortable to wear.  Again, this is appreciated by all of our fans and has been for years.

In the past 6 months, all of a sudden the charms of lightweight faux tortoise has been lost.  People want to wear clunky animal bone.  I have had numerous conversations in the past 4 days where a buyer will ask if it's horn, I say no it's acetate and they b-line it out of there.  This is all fine and dandy, this part doesn't bother me, our jewelry isn't for everyone.  The part I have a hard time with is that people seem to think we are selling jewelry that is trying to be or copy horn.   We sell faux-tortoise jewelry, and I think it's been around long enough where that doesn't need explaining.

I'm also a little surprised that there are so many people out there comfortable with wearing real horn, and I sincerely hope the horn being sold here is truly cruelty free.  Since we are proud that we are selling (gulp) PLASTIC, and not real animal horn I've decided I will start referring to our material as vegan tortoise when at shows, as acetate is a plant-based material, totally cruelty free and not harmful to the environment.

Having to stand there at the shows with a smile on my face while people look down on your product is not a good feeling, and I have to just remember that most of those people are uninformed, and that there are plenty of buyers out there who appreciate a quality product that is handmade by a small business in the United States and to boot, does not involve animal bi-products.  I'm very proud of what we do here, and I promise no more rant posts!

The Shows Will Go On

I love the holidays, well, most things about the holidays: the lights, cheesy movies, gift giving, Christmas songs, ALL the food-but it's all very tiring when you're trying to juggle the rest of your life, while not spending all your money, fighting off colds and holiday expectations.  It's also usually the most stressful time at work for me, designing the new Spring/Summer line, photographing it for the catalogs, etc.  No matter how long I've been doing this, this time of year always creeps up on me.  THEN there's New Year's: UGH.  By that time, I'm completely exhausted and can't wear clothes because I don't fit into any of them.  So, while I've been thinking I need to just get through the holidays, I realized recently what kind of January (and February) it's going to be.

Without further adieu, I present to you the:
Lisa August Trade 2014 Show Schedule

ENK Accessory Circuit
January 6-8
Pier 94
Booth #: 3107

Atlanta Gift Show
January 9-13
America's Mart Building 3, 4th Floor Jewelry & Fashion Accessories
Booth #: 4-1918

NY NOW (NY Gift Show)
February 2-6
Javits Center : Personal Accessories
Booth#: 8622

You may have noticed that we are going to be in Atlanta this year.  We thought it was best considering Super Bowl Sunday being in New York on the same day NY NOW opens, we may not be as busy as one would want.  I do plan to tailgate in the booth that day if you plan on coming!

I know this sounds like a complainy post, and I'm really not upset, I just want to get through it all!  I'm very excited to show the new line off, and I think it will have a great reception.  First line designed at headquarters!

So, enjoy your holidays all, and come see us in 2014!!!

It's Almost Lisa AUGUST time!

So, it's been a long month of delays and red tape, what have you.  We find ourselves entering August still in our former Bellissima space but the closing is in sight.  Also in sight are our first two trade shows, the big Lisa August premiere!  We set up for the ENK show this Friday, August 2nd.  Pretty hard to believe, but looking very much forward to it! Then we do it all over again for the Gift Show, new name: NY NOW, apparently.  We'll be finishing up some last minute show preparations this week, but I must say, other than the fact that we haven't moved into our new space (a minor set-back-haha) we are all set for our big reveal-so come see us!
